Gorgeous, antique, silver plate/ Old Sheffield Plate, dish cover/food dome/cloche by Roberts, Cadman & Co. This dome is of the more desirable (and expensive) lobed body with a shell and flower, swagged supporting oval. Has a detachable looped handle designed like swag vines and flowers. Each side of the dome has a square shield of inlaid silver for a family crest or monogram, etc, but they are blank for any future owner to put what they wish. In the exact middle of the shield is a tiny dot which, "was always made in the centre of such shields by which the engraver could identify his central point"--see 7th and 8th pictures. "The presence of a silver shield is an indication the piece is genuine Sheffield plate:. The inside is tinned. According to Gf. Bernard Hughes in his book Sheffield Silver Plate, "A tin lining was preferred to double-plated metal, as the molten covered all impurities and assisted in keeping the article clean". This stunning dome is perfect to keep on display when not in use. A beautiful addition to your silver collection.
Marks: Makers Mark Sheffield Stamp of a bell. The mark for Roberts, Cadman & Co underneath the handle
Measurements: approx 14" long x 10 1/4 wide x 10" tall to top of finial. Inside approx 7" at its tallest.
This dome is in great, antique condition. May show signs of age and use like light surface scratches, some darkening to the tinning on the inside (which is standard), light wear and base metal of copper peeking through on bottom where it comes into contact with tray/table--which is expected and desirable. No obvious damage.
